Video download from Canon Optura 40 w/ Vista OS?

I just bought a used Canon Optura 40, and when I plug in the camcorder to my computer, nothing happens. Vista doesn't recognize it via Firewire cable (yes, i have it switched to VCR/Playback mode). I am thinking I need video editing software, but the pinnacle studio that came with it is only v. 9. Pinnacle Website says I need at least v. 10 for Vista. I already have the Adobe CS3 suite, so can I use one of those programs (Primiere???) to download video? If so, HOW? Other ideas?

The Optura 40 should work fine with Vista according to Canon:

so, it could be that all you need is a video editting program to import the videos…Vista comes with Windows Movie Maker that you can try. If it's not already installed, you can download it for free from the Microsoft website:
