which camcorder should i keep: canon optura 40 vs. panasonic pv-gs180?

Thursday Oct 16, 2008

i have owned a canon optura 40 for two years now, and mainly use it for indoor home video of my kids. a couple days ago i received a panasonic pv-gs180 for christmas, and need to decide which one to keep. i've had a hard time deciding based on reviews, since the reviews of these cameras are calibrated according to the prevailing standards at the time of the cameras' release. i'd like to decide without having to open up the panasonic pv-gs180 to facilitate returning it, if that's what i end up doing.

any advice would be appreciated!

Video download from Canon Optura 40 w/ Vista OS?

Sunday Oct 12, 2008

I just bought a used Canon Optura 40, and when I plug in the camcorder to my computer, nothing happens. Vista doesn't recognize it via Firewire cable (yes, i have it switched to VCR/Playback mode). I am thinking I need video editing software, but the pinnacle studio that came with it is only v. 9. Pinnacle Website says I need at least v. 10 for Vista. I already have the Adobe CS3 suite, so can I use one of those programs (Primiere???) to download video? If so, HOW? Other ideas?

The Optura 40 should work fine with Vista according to Canon:
http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=OSCompatibilitySupportAct&keycode=vistadr&fcategoryid=227&modelid=10078
so, it could be that all you need is a video editting program to import the videos…Vista comes with Windows Movie Maker that you can try. If it's not already installed, you can download it for free from the Microsoft website:

Canon Optura 50 playback issue?

Thursday Oct 9, 2008

When I play back movies from my Canon Optura 50 on my computer using Windows Movie Maker 2 – all the sound only comes through one of the two speakers-

I have been filming musicians solo and using one shot-gun boom mic made for mini DV camcorders-

should I bee using two or am I overlooking something else?

Can anyone help me here? – probably a really dumb problem-

If you are using a mono microphone you will record on only one channel. If you want stereo you need a stereo microphone or two mono microphones. You can copy the one channel you are recording to the other channel after you transfer the video to your computer. The sound will be mono but from both speakers.
